Theatre On the Scene in collaboration with the SPRON Group

Theatre On the Scene in collaboration with the SPRON Group opens the musical Cabaret by Masteroff, Ebb and Kander in the Opera House in Reykjavík on the 4th of August 2005.

Cabaret is one of the best known musical ever written. The Bob Fosse film, starring Joel Grey as MC and Liza Minelli as Sally Bowles, was a huge hit and in recent years the musical has made a return, especially through the very original staging of Sam Mendez in London and New York. The musical is based on a play, I´m a Camera by John Van Druten from 1952. That play was based on the Berlin Stories by Christopher Isherwood from 1934. The quality of the music and the class of the writing is undisputed but what makes the musical Cabaret such a classic is the story itself and the importance of it being told again and again. The background is Berlin in the late 1920´s. The Weimar Republic is coming to an end. The Nazis are getting stronger. The party in Berlin is wild. A young writer, Cliff Bradshaw, enters into this mayhem and tries to make sense of it. He meets a variety of characters and most of the happenings in the story are mirrored through the Kit Kat Club, where the MC and Sally Bowles are the stars. We are brought into a strange and glamorous world, full of laughter and joy but the shadow of facism is always looming in the background..
